What This Grant Funds

The USGS is offering a funding opportunity to a CESU partner for research in  Geographic Names Spanish Translation for The National Map U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) National Geospatial Program (NGP) solicits research on “Geographic Names Spanish Translation for The National Map”. This research includes collaborative opportunities with university researchers to conduct research on GNIS feature name translation from English to Spanish. The collaborative research should use The National Map geospatial data sources including the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), National Hydrography Dataset (NHD), National Boundaries Dataset (NBD), National Structures Dataset (NSD), and other sources used by The National Map to demonstrate dual-language translation processes and efficient dual-language map labeling techniques compatible with the Dynamic Mapping Product-on-Demand (PoD) environment and to evaluate cartographic dual-language label treatment options.

This financial assistance opportunity is being issued under a Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (CESU) Program.  CESU’s are partnerships that provide research, technical assistance, and education.  Eligible recipients must be a participating partner of the Colorado Plateau Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (CPCESU) Program.
