GRANTQUICK SUMMARYPlain-English Overview

ACL is funding one $750K-$775K award for Peer Supports for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). This supports a project to develop and provide peer mentoring and support for people who use AAC devices (communication boards, speech-generating devices, eye-tracking systems). The idea: people who successfully use AAC help others who are learning — a peer-to-peer model for communication disability support.

Who Should Apply

Disability organizations, universities with AAC research programs, or nonprofits serving people who use AAC. Must have deep connections to the AAC user community and capacity to develop peer support models.

Who Should NOT Apply

AAC device manufacturers, speech-language pathology clinics without peer support infrastructure, organizations without connections to AAC users, or researchers without community engagement plans.

Key Requirements (Plain English)

  • Must develop peer support models for AAC users
  • Must involve AAC users as peer mentors and leaders
  • Single award of $750K-$775K
  • Must build sustainable peer support infrastructure
  • Must address diverse AAC user populations
  • No cost-sharing required

💡 GrantQuick Tip

This is a specialized disability services grant. The ideal applicant is either: (1) a disability organization with existing AAC user networks who can formalize peer support, or (2) a university AAC lab with strong community connections that can test a peer mentoring model. The crucial element: AAC users themselves must be involved in designing and delivering the peer support — this can't be clinician-led. Show you have AAC users ready to serve as mentors.

Competitiveness: Moderate — single award in a specialized field. Limited applicant pool (few organizations combine AAC expertise with peer support infrastructure).
