What This Grant Funds
OJP is committed to advancing work that promotes civil rights and racial equity, increases access to justice, supports crime victims and individuals impacted by the justice system, strengthens community safety and protects the public from crime and evolving threats and builds trust between law enforcement and the community. In June 2021, the White House Domestic Policy Council and Gender Policy Council announced the establishment of the Interagency Working Group on Safety, Inclusion, and Opportunity for Transgender Americans. This is in response to the fact that still today, many transgender Americans, especially transgender women and girls of color, face epidemic levels of violence, discrimination, and stigma. The proposed project will seek to begin to address that issue by funding one entity to create a toolkit with updated information on how to respond to transgender victims of crime, especially for transgender women and girls of color. According to a new study by the University of California Los Angeles Williams Institute, "transgender people are four times more likely than cisgender people to experience violent victimization, including rape, sexual assault, and aggravated or simple assault." This project seeks to develop a toolkit for the field that will inform organizations on how to better serve transgender people, in a culturally responsive and trauma-informed way.
