What This Grant Funds

The FY 2017 Smart on Juvenile Justice: Reducing Out-of-Home Placement program will strengthen and expand the use of community-based alternatives to out-of-home placement and minimize approaches based solely on control and deterrence in favor of individualized treatment and services.

Who Can Apply

Eligible applicants are limited to states that are currently in compliance with the core requirements of the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act (the Act). Pursuant to the Act, at 42 U.S.C. 5603(7), the term “state” means any state of the United States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and American Samoa. Only the agency that the chief executive (e.g., the governor) of each state designates is eligible to apply for these funds.
